Here is the roar of a Lion painted by the artist Emiliano Morciano. To see the lion's mouth, it seems starving! In lions both male and female are able to roar but the cry of the male is much more powerful than that of the female. It can be heard for miles. The lion is a particularly social animal, its cry is used in very different circumstances. The roar can be used to intimidate rivals during a fight, frighten predators who try to attack their group, demarcate their territory, or call members of their group.
