Mobile Suit Gundam belongs to a very popular sub-genre of science fiction in Japan: the mecha. The main concept of the genre is to stage robots (in the broadest sense) remotely controlled or controlled by a human, or even by an artificial intelligence1. More precisely in Gundam, these robots are war machines directed from the inside (in a cockpit), which we call "mobile suits", and which can evolve on Earth as well as in space.
