Kodama are yokai, or Japanese ghosts, who live in trees. They are said to be the spirits of deceased samurai who attached themselves to a particular tree. Kodama are generally considered to be benevolent beings, and they are often depicted as helpful creatures who guide lost travelers. In some stories, they are also said to be able to predict the future. The Kodama are generally depicted as small, childlike beings with bald heads and large eyes. They usually wear red or white robes and carry small bells called haguruma. These bells are believed to ward off evil spirits, and they also serve as a means of communication between kodama.
