Before meeting Zack, Aerith had known only a life of poverty and abuse. She was born in the slums of the city of Midgar and spent her childhood living on the streets. When she was only five years old, she was orphaned when her mother died as a result of mistreatment by the Shinrah company. After that, Aerith did everything she could to get by, often just stealing food to survive. She ended up being caught and sent to the Sector 5 church, where she met Zack Fair. Zack was a member of the elite military group known as SOLDIER, and he immediately took a liking to Aerith. He started visiting her frequently and the two quickly became friends. Over time, Zack began teaching Aerith about the world outside of Midgar, and he even shared his dream of one day leaving town and seeing the world. Unfortunately, Zack's dream never came true; he was killed on a mission when he was only 24 years old. Nonetheless, his love with Aerith had a profound impact on her life, and she will always remember him fondly.
