The Middle Ages is a period in the history of Europe, extending from the end of the fifth century to the end of the fifteenth century. The art of war was also marked by the evolution of the Roman spatha which lengthened and refined to give birth to the medieval sword while the armor of scales was gradually replaced by the coat of mail and lamellar armor. The crisis of the end of the Middle Ages and the pandemic of the Black Death mark the end of the classical Middle Ages and see the stagnation of the economy and the outbreak of several wars (including the Hundred Years War). This is called the "great medieval depression" theorized by Guy Bois which marks the beginning of the entry into the late Middle Ages as opposed to the Renaissance.
